If you’ve been eyeing a career in the sky, BA is officially opening up their next intake. It doesn’t matter if you’re fresh out of uni or you’ve been working in retail for years, this is arguably the best way to get your foot in the door with the UK’s flagship carrier. But before you hit apply, there’s a bit of “fine print” you should know about.
The Pay & Perks
The question everyone asks is: “What’s the actual take-home?” While your base salary is fixed, your real earnings are higher because of flying allowances and “time away” pay. Most crew at Heathrow end up seeing between £21,000 and £30,000+ annually once those extras kick in.
The perks are the real draw, though. After six months, you get the famous “Hotline” tickets and standby travel for you and your nominees. You also get a 7% pension, 30 days off, and a tech scheme to grab a new laptop interest-free.
Choosing Your Base: Heathrow, Gatwick, or London City?
Your lifestyle changes completely depending on where you’re based:
Heathrow (LHR): The “classic” experience. You’ll do a mix of quick European hops and big long-haul trips to New York, Tokyo, or Cape Town. Expect a lot of hotel stays and time away from home.
Gatwick (LGW): This is the Euroflyer operation. It’s high-energy and focuses on short-haul. It’s perfect if you want to fly plenty of hours but still sleep in your own bed most nights.
London City (LCY): The “boutique” option. You’ll be on smaller Embraer jets dealing with regular business travelers. It’s a tight-knit environment where everyone knows each other.

The Road to Getting Hired
