QatarEnergy is hiring a Head of Reservoir Studies (MM-ALR) based in Doha, Qatar. The role supports the development of the Maydan Mahzam, Bul Hanine and Al-Rayyan (MM, BH and ALR) fields. The main aim is to move around 600 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) from contingent resources into reserves through front-end studies.

The post holder will lead and supervise geologists, geophysicists, petrophysicists and reservoir engineers. The studies cover both developed reserves and discovered reserves that are not yet developed.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate geological, geophysical, petrophysical and reservoir engineering work on all reservoirs in MM and ALR.
  • Start and manage internal and external integrated geoscience and reservoir studies that aim to improve recovery of oil, gas and condensate, while keeping to high technical standards, business goals and budgets.
  • Check that the methods and assumptions used in subsurface models for field development plans are sound.
  • Coordinate in-place volume estimates, prepare the annual review of reserves and produce long-term oil, gas and condensate production forecasts, following QP-PRMS-based guidelines.
  • Contribute to annual reservoir management plans to improve field performance.
  • Provide geoscience and reservoir engineering input for well proposals, and review drilling, workover and well abandonment plans.
  • Identify subsurface uncertainties and plan the data gathering needed to reduce risk.
  • Take part in the annual budget process.
  • Support the team through recruitment, retention and training, and take part in interview panels for geoscience and reservoir engineering posts.

What you need

  • At least 15 years’ work experience in upstream oil and gas exploration, development and production.
  • A minimum of 10 years of direct technical experience in reservoir geosciences, reservoir engineering and subsurface field development.
  • A postgraduate degree.
  • A good technical understanding of all the main areas of geosciences, petrophysics and reservoir engineering for oil field development.
  • Recognised within the industry as an authority in your discipline.
  • Good commercial skills, as you will work closely with contractors and consultants and be responsible for starting and managing their contracts.
  • Strong leadership, organisational and communication skills.
  • Experience of working in multinational teams and leading people from many cultures and nationalities.
  • The ability to plan, organise and deliver work with a high degree of independence.

Direct operational experience is listed as desirable.

Other details from the role

  • You will recommend the objectives and deliverables for studies that will shape future development strategies for the fields. These studies may be carried out in-house or by commercial contractors or international oil companies.
  • You will help decide the number and location of new wells for QP-operated oil fields, which affect deliverability, cost and the reserves developed.
  • You will be responsible for the staffing and structure of the geosciences and reservoir engineering team, which currently has an establishment of 10.
  • Contracts for geoscience and reservoir engineering studies are awarded on a competitive basis to service companies, and you will set the deliverables for them.
  • You will develop and explain a technically robust vision of future development options, then build a strategy to choose the options that create the most value for the company.

In most roles of this kind, the work involves guiding technical teams, setting study priorities, checking the quality of subsurface work and making decisions that balance technical risk with cost and timing.
